DuBois junior Ty Haines has been named this week's PSUAC Student-Athlete of the Week for wrestling. Competing in the 149 pound weight class thorugh the NCWA National Championship, the junior claimed the championship title with an 8-3 decision over the University of Southern California's Nick Cegelski - Cegelski entered the final bout with a 26-0 record and stood as a four-time NCWA All-American.
Haines got the opening takedown in just 16 seconds and rode out the period with a 2-0 lead. He
continued his dominance on top in the second period and extended the lead to 6-0 before Cegelski got on the board midway through the third period. Haines held off Cegelski the last 20 seconds to secure the first NCWA championship for the Penn State DuBois campus.
Along the way Haines defeated Robert Gaddis (TAMU) 3-1, TJ Nelson Penn State WC Main Campus 10-0, Julian Prieto Univ. Colorado 8-4, Jay Sheppard Emmanuel College 8-7 to set the title match with Cegelski. The 149-pounder finished the championship with a 5-0 record.
Ty becomes the first NCWA Champion for the Penn State Athletic Conference. Ty finishes the season with a 28-8 record. The junior competed much of the season at the 165 and 157 pound weight classes.
