Northeastern deer more susceptible to wasting disease than those to the west

Some deer are more susceptible to chronic wasting disease that is spreading through herds of white-tailed deer across much of the United States, according to Penn State researchers, who have identified a panel of genetic markers that reliably predict which animals are most vulnerable to the contagious neurological disorder.

Inaugural Drawdown Scholars class arrives at Penn State

Fifty-five undergraduate students from across the country have arrived at Penn State to take part in the first-ever Drawdown Scholars Research Experience for Undergraduates Program. Dubbed Drawdown Scholars, the students will spend eight weeks embedded in research programs across the University, with the aim of investigating positive solutions-orientated paths to take action on climate change.

Benefit celebration to feature winner of NBC's 'America's Got Talent'

Landau Eugene Murphy Jr., winner of season six of NBC?s ?America?s Got Talent,? will headline this year?s Penn State DuBois Benefit Celebration, slated for 6 p.m. Oct. 12 at the DuBois Country Club. Rod Heisey retires from teaching and research after 30 years at Schuylkill

Rod Heisey began teaching biology at Penn State Schuylkill in 1990. This May, he acted as campus marshal in his last commencement ceremony and bid farewell to his final students. After nearly 30 years of service, Heisey has retired. Now, he looks forward to tending his land in Lancaster County and traveling the world.

Schuylkill lecturer aims to help improve health in developing nations

Tom Sandridge, instructor and program coordinator of radiological sciences at Penn State Schuylkill, has co-authored and edited a textbook in partnership with Doctors Without Borders, addressing basic radiology practices for people of developing nations. ?This is my way of giving back to the profession I?ve loved for the past 30 years," he said.

Wilkes-Barre campus community walks 4,738 miles for LionPulse wellness challenge

Penn State Wilkes-Barre has set its sights on prioritizing the health and wellness of the campus community, with help from a partnership with Penn State LionPulse, an initiative of Penn State PRO Wellness. The campus? efforts recently included a LionPulse wellness challenge, where 41 community members competed to see who could walk the farthest and if, collectively, they could walk the entire distance of U.S. Route 66.

Career exploration camp teaches youth about manufacturing and logistics industry

Penn State Wilkes-Barre Continuing Education is offering a new and exciting career exploration camp, ?Supplying Pizza to the World,? for boys and girls entering grades six to 12. This camp will research global markets to identify pizza products matching the diverse tastes in each market. Participants will learn what critical skills are needed to manufacture and deliver products to these global markets ? while enjoying pizza along the way.

Scranton campus, community members participate in Diversity Circles initiative

Penn State Scranton recently held its most recent round of Diversity Circles with participants that included campus students and staff members, as well as local community members. The Diversity Circles are overseen by trained facilitators and are meant to foster a more inclusive perspective among participants.

Dawson Building undergoing phase two of renovation project

This summer, the Dawson Building at Penn State Scranton, named for the campus? first director, is undergoing the second phase of a comprehensive renovation project, with local construction crews gutting and remodeling its first floor. The project is expected to be completed in time for the start of the fall semester.
