DUBOIS, Pa.—It happened at York. It happened at home against Beaver. Surely it wouldn't, couldn't happen again. But unbelievably, it did. Woody Mitchell sank a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer to give Penn State Dubois an 80-77 win over the Roaring Lions.
The teams appeared headed to overtime when James Pratt (Uniontown, Pa.) drained a three from the top of the key with two seconds to go, tying the game at 77.
DuBois jumped out to a 21-6 lead before Fayette began to chip away at the lead. Darius Mack (Washington, D.C.) buried a three from the corner and by the time Derek Jones (Brownsville, Pa.) hit a trey from the right side, the Roaring Lions had a 17-7 run and closed to 28-23.
After Dubois' Kawshawn McGlaughlin made a pair of free throws, Jones again hit a trey that ignited another run that closed the gap to two at 30-28. The Roaring Lions trailed 36-31 going into halftime.
Brandon Cunningham (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) scored seven consecutive points in less than a minute to tie the score at 47 with 13 minutes left.
The Roaring Lions took the lead following three consecutive free throws from Pratt, a Jones layup and two free throws from Cunningham.
Dubois regained the lead on a pair of Jon Hau free throws with a 1:45 to play. Will Gaines (Capital Heights, Md.) hit a layup to put Fayette up 71-70 but a pair of Kai Ahmad free throws turned the game 72-71 in favor of DuBois.
McGlaughlin hit a pair of layups and a free throw for a 77-74 lead. That's when Pratt tied it with two second to go, setting the stage for Mitchell's heartbreaker.
Fayette (7-11, 6-2 PSUAC) was led by a game-high 27 from Cunningham. Pratt, Fayette's newest member of the 1,000 point club, added 20 to go along with eight rebounds and three steals.
Jones scored 10 off of the bench, while Ryan Hart (Pittsburgh, Pa.) grabbed six rebounds.
The Roaring Lions return to action on Friday, Jan. 25 when they host Penn State Hazleton. Tip-off is 3:00 p.m.
