Softball Sweeps Valley Forge to Run Win Streak to Four

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. – Penn State Fayette's women's softball team capped a perfect road trip by sweeping a doubleheader with Valley Forge Christian College by scores of 9-1 and 27-11. The wins increased the team's winning streak to four and cam on the heels of a doubleheader sweep in the conference opener against Penn College the day before.


GAME ONE: Fayette 9, Valley Forge 1


Moriah Kromer (Mount Pleasant, Pa.) pitched five solid innings to pick up her third win of the season. She struck out nine and walked one.


Katie Volek (Smithfield, Pa.) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in a run.  Stephanie Longo (Point Marion, Pa.) and Jessica Stairs (Mount Pleasant, Pa.) each had two hits. Stairs drove in a pair of runs.


With one out, Shelby Dziak (Eighty Four, Pa.) singled to left and advanced to second on an error. Stairs then reached on an error that brought Dziak home with the first run, with Stairs taking second on the play. Voleck  singled up the middle and promptly stole second. Stacey Riggar's (Uniontown, Pa.) sacrifice fly to center scored Stairs. Longo drove Vokek home with the inning's third run.


The Roaring Lions tacked on another three in the second inning. With one out, Samantha Virgillo (Dunbar, Pa.)  and Kromer both walked and later scored on Volek's double to left center. Stairs singled scoring Virgillo and Kromer. Volek doubled to left center driving in Stairs and putting the Roaring Lions up by six runs.


Valley Forge answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the third and neither team scored again until the fifth, when Fayette added another three to close out the scoring.


With one out, Paige McWilliams singled, stole second and advanced to third on an error by the catcher. Virgillo walked and Kromer hit into a fielder's choice with McWilliams out after being caught in a rundown between third and home. After Dziak walked, Stairs reached on an error that scored Kromer and Virgillo. When Riggar reached on an error by the second baseman, Dziak scored.


GAME TWO: Fayette 27, Valley Forge 11


Offense was on display in the second game as the teams combined for 36 hits and 38 runs.


Fayette pounded out 24 of those hits. Stairs and Longo were both 4-for-6 with 5 RBI. Kromer went 3-for-6 and drove in five runs.  McWilliams was a perfect 5-for-5 with a pair of RBI and three runs scored. Stairs and Volek each had a pair of doubles and Kromer added a triple.  


Fayette got things started by putting up 10 runs in the first inning.


Kromer started the game with a walk and promptly stole second. She later scored on Stairs' single. Volek followed with a single and Riggar walked to load the bases. Volek and Stairs scored on Longo's single. Elizabeth D'Auria (Connellsville, Pa.) walked. Rigger scored on McWilliams' single.  Kaytee Cumberland's  (Leisenring, Pa.) ground out to the pitcher drove in Longo.


Kromer cleared the bases with a triple, driving in two. Dziak walked and when the centerfielder misplayed Stairs' fly ball, Kromer scored. Volek followed with a double, scoring Dziak.  After a walk to Riggar, Longo reached on an error by the right fielder, scoring Stairs.


The Roaring Lions added three more in the top of the second to take a 13-0 lead. McWilliams walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Cumerland followed with a single and Kromer reached on a fielder's choice as McWilliams was out on the force at third.


With two out, Stairs singled. Volek's bases loaded walk scored Cumberland and Kromer scored on Rigger's single to center. Longo followed with a single, scoring Stairs.


Valley Forge answered with four runs of its own, taking advantage of three Fayette errors. The Patriots added three more in the third.


Longo got a run back in the fourth, singling to drive in Volek, who had doubled to start the inning.


Valley Forge got two back in the fourth but Fayette answered with a five-spot in the fifth.


Stairs doubled with one out and scored on Volek's grounder to second.  Riggar walked and later scored on Longo's single. D'Auria and McWilliams followed with singles, loading the bases. Longo scored on a walk to Cumberland. Kromer's single scored McWilliams and D'Auria.


After the Patriots put two more runs up in their half of the fifth, Fayette put the game out of reach with eight runs in the top of the sixth.


Stairs walked. After Volek reached on an error, Rigar doubled to left center scoring two.  Longo reached on an error as did D'Auria with Riggar scoring on that play. McWilliams followed with a single, scoring Longo. D'Auria scored on a fielder's choice and Kromer's single plated McWilliams. After Dziak singled, Stairs cleared the bases with a double.


Fayette improves to 6-6 on the season and hosts Penn State Beaver on Wednesday, April 11.
