Women’s Basketball: Steer Scores Season High 37, Leads Team in Win over PSU Scranton to Clinch Playoff Berth

 

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Jamie Steer (South Williamsport) scored a season high 37 points to lead the Pennsylvania College of Technology women's basketball team to a 93-89 win over Penn State Scranton Sunday. The win clinches as a spot in the conference playoffs for the Lady Wildcats and is the final game of the regular season. Senior Kierstin Steer (South Williamsport) recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds in the game that is the highest scoring for the team. The win evens the team out to 12-12 overall and 7-7 in the Penn State University Athletics Conference.  

  

Scranton opened with back-to-back threes to take an early lead. The team hit 14 in the game shooting .311.  

 

Sophomore MacKenzie Brown (Lititz) went on a 5-0 run to make it 8-7 with 17:27 to go. Brown ended the game with 19 points and nine rebounds.

 

Down 38-28 in the sixth, Penn College went on an 11-1 run, five from sophomore Jenna Matzinger (Coudersport), to bring it to within one at 2:21. The Lions held onto the lead, going into the break up 44-43.

 

Matzinger ended the game with a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds.

 

Out of the break, the Lady Wildcats went on a 12-0 run, four each from Jamie Steer and Brown, to take a 56-44 lead in the 15th. A pair of free throws from Matzinger at 11:27 gave them their biggest lead of the game at 69-55.

 

The Lions clawed back and tied it up at 81 with a three from Jess Segilia in the fourth. Segilia lit up the three-point line going 7-14 (.500) and scoring a triple-double with 33 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.

 

With the game tied at 83 at the three minute mark, Jamie Steer started a 5-0 run giving Penn College a little cushion. Segilia hit two more threes, but the cushion was enough ending the game in favor of Penn College.

 

As a team, the Lady Wildcats shot 33-85 (.388) from the field and out-rebounded Scranton 64-14

 

Next up, Penn College will wait to hear the official seedings for the playoffs. Scheduled date of play will be either Tuesday, Feb. 12 or Wednesday, Feb. 13.
