Fatzinger and Keil Recognized in 2025 as Robert J. Scannell Roll of Honor Recipients
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State University Athletic Conference recognized two members of its community in 2025 as Robert J. Scannell Roll of Honor recipients. The award recognizes athletic administrators, coaches, faculty and staff members for outstanding contributions to their PSUAC member instititution and the PSUAC.
In spring 2025, recently retired Penn State Lehigh Valley athletic director Rich Fatzinger was named the 2024-25 recipient of the award after spending nearly 16 years leading the athletic department in the Allentown area. A former high school educator and basketball coach, including state championship runs, Fatzinger helped start the athletics program at Lehigh Valley.
Lehigh Valley won six PSUAC titles during his time, along with numerous runner-up finishes in conference play. Golf accounted for four championships, while women's basketball won in 2019 and men's soccer won in Fatzinger's final semester at the helm in fall 2024. Fatzinger also served as the President of the PSUAC Council of Athletic Directors.
Fatzinger was recognized at Lehigh Valley's athletics banquet in late March, being surprised with the award on the night he was the guest speaker. As part of the continued recognition of the award, Fatzinger was also honored in a ceremony at halftime of Penn State football's All-U Day against Villanova on September 13, 2025.
"It truly was an honor working with Rich during his time at Lehigh Valley," said PSUAC Commissioner Ryan Ehrie. "He was always a leader in the room and worked to find the best option to benefit our student-athletes and the conference. His dedication and leadership helped grow Lehigh Valley's into a championship-caliber athletic program."
The 2025-26 Scannell Award was also presented this fall to long-time Penn State Wilkes-Barre golf coach Ed Keil. Keil, who also took the reins of the Penn State Hazleton program, has been coaching at Penn State since 1988 after having been a student at Wilkes-Barre in the late 1970s.
Keil has compiled eight conference championships during his tenure, in addition to 53 tournament titles and five undefeated regular seasons. Under his tutelage, Wilkes-Barre has recorded 133 PSUAC All-Conference golfers, 186 PSUAC All-Academic recipients and four PCAA/PSUAC Individual Medalists.
Inducted into Wilkes-Barre's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015, Keil has also been named the United States Collegiate Athletic Association's Golf Coach of the Year, earning that accolade in 2018.
Keil has spent his life around golf, serving as a Women's and Junior Golf Clinic instructor since 2000 and serving as course superintendent at various courses in the Wilkes-Barre region since 1980.
"Ed is one of the most deserving Scannell award recipients we've ever had," said Ehrie. "He has committed himself to Penn State Wilkes-Barre, and now Penn State Hazleton, over the years. He constantly strives to make his student-athletes better golfers, but also better people. Ed has always done whatever he's been asked at Wilkes-Barre and he's done the same for the PSUAC."
Keil was presented the award in front of his peers and the entire group of PSUAC golfers after the PSUAC Blue Course Invitational on September 29. After learning more about the award through research and discussions with past winners, Keil fully understands the significance of the recognition.
"I truly consider (receiving this) award an honor," said Keil.
