Northeastern deer more susceptible to wasting disease than those to the west

Some deer are more susceptible to chronic wasting disease that is spreading through herds of white-tailed deer across much of the United States, according to Penn State researchers, who have identified a panel of genetic markers that reliably predict which animals are most vulnerable to the contagious neurological disorder.

Penn State Brandywine to host first homecoming Sept. 28

Penn State Brandywine will host its first-ever homecoming from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28. Attendees can enjoy barbecue-style food, Penn State Berkey Creamery ice cream, campus tours and family-friendly activities alongside fellow Penn State alumni, as well as Brandywine students, faculty and staff.

Cynthia Lightfoot named interim chancellor at Penn State Brandywine

Cynthia Lightfoot, director of academic affairs, has been named interim chancellor of Penn State Brandywine, effective Aug. 1. Lightfoot will take over for Chancellor Kristin Woolever, who will retire on July 31 after leading the campus since 2014. A national search to identify the campus? next chancellor is in progress.

Courses on Mandarin Chinese to be offered at Penn State DuBois

Those interested in learning another language will have the opportunity to attend a course on conversational and business Mandarin Chinese at Penn State DuBois. The course is designed for those planning a trip to China or doing business with Chinese companies, or for individuals who just want to learn more about the Chinese language and culture.

Penn State DuBois Alumni Society to honor three at annual Benefit Celebration

Three individuals will be honored for their accomplishments, as well as their dedication to Penn State DuBois, at the annual Benefit Celebration on Oct. 12. The Alumni Society will present their Alumni Awards during the celebration to Richard Ogden, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award; Anita McDonald, recipient of the Distinguished Ambassador Award; and Craig Hicks, recipient of the Outstanding Alumni Award.

DuBois Wildlife Technology Program awarded five-year accreditation

This summer, the Penn State DuBois Wildlife Technology Program earned a continued five-year accreditation with the North American Wildlife Technology Association (NAWTA). The program has been accredited by NAWTA for 35 years, and it is the only accredited two-year wildlife technology program in Pennsylvania.

Courses in metal machining slated for August at Penn State DuBois

The need for metal-machining workers in the region continues to grow, and Penn State DuBois, in conjunction with Workrforce Solutions of North Central Pennsylvania, has developed an entry-level training to help get more operators into the local industry. The program runs from the beginning of August until mid-November.

Foreign study course includes community service in Kerala, India

Penn State students studying health care, sports or community disciplines can enroll in the elective course NURS 499 for the fall 2019 semester to learn about their field of interest and then travel to Kerala, India, to perform community service as it relates to their field of study while also seeing some of India?s landmark sites.

Rod Heisey retires from teaching and research after 30 years at Schuylkill

Rod Heisey began teaching biology at Penn State Schuylkill in 1990. This May, he acted as campus marshal in his last commencement ceremony and bid farewell to his final students. After nearly 30 years of service, Heisey has retired. Now, he looks forward to tending his land in Lancaster County and traveling the world.

Penn State Shenango hires new cheerleading coach for 2019-20 season

Penn State Shenango recently hired Rakiesha Morrison, a former Farrell High School cheerleader and Gannon University competitive cheerleader and dancer, as its new head cheerleading coach. She currently coaches competitive cheer for Fire and Ice Hermitage and is employed at the Mercer County Courthouse in Mercer, Pennsylvania.

Wilkes-Barre campus community walks 4,738 miles for LionPulse wellness challenge

Penn State Wilkes-Barre has set its sights on prioritizing the health and wellness of the campus community, with help from a partnership with Penn State LionPulse, an initiative of Penn State PRO Wellness. The campus? efforts recently included a LionPulse wellness challenge, where 41 community members competed to see who could walk the farthest and if, collectively, they could walk the entire distance of U.S. Route 66.

Spring/fall 2020 Scranton students now have early-action option starting Aug. 1

Students looking to enroll at Penn State Scranton for spring/fall 2020 can do so starting Aug. 1 to be considered early-action applicants, giving them more time to begin and complete their applications. Those who complete the application by Nov. 1 will receive an admissions decision by Dec. 24 and get notice of their student aid package in mid-February, giving them more time to sort out their financial position.
