Men's Basketball: York Outlasts Mont Alto to Take Home PSUAC Crown
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa- Top-seeded Penn State York captured its second consecutive PSUAC championship with a 72-63 victory over Penn State Mont Alto at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Juniors Tyler Martin and Josh Jamison paved the way for York, combining for 45 points and 20 rebounds, including a double-double for Martin. Senior center Ben Todd also recorded a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Sophomore guard Sharif Welton led Mont Alto with 18 points, while sophomore guard Bobby Ingram, 13, and freshman forward Jerome Evans,11, also notched in double-figures in scoring.
It was the third time this season the two division rivals had met, and as York Athletic Director Chris Beaverson put it, "we simply seemed to make the least amount of mistakes. We could play Mont Alto 100 times and would probably split 50-50."
Despite their top player being hampered by an early injury, Beaverson noted how much of a strong bond his squad has. "We are a true team; we were frequently outsized but certainly showed the biggest heart."
York now moves on to the USCAA National Championship next week at Penn State Fayette, and Beaverson feels that their team will be much more equipped in their second stint.
"We seemed a bit shell-shocked in our first appearance last year, but this time around, I know that we are better prepared."
Beaverson also commented that his program will be hosting a viewing party for the selections, and that they "are looking forward to getting a better matchup, as well."
