Greater Allegheny Wrestling Opens Up 2013-14 Season at W&J Invitational
Washington, Pa. - The Penn State Greater Allegheny men's wrestling squad had five wrestlers going to bout on Saturday as the men traveled to Washington and Jefferson College for an Invitational.
Junior Matt Lago (Jeannette, Pa./Penn-Trafford) won in his consolation preliminary rounds, 18-3, against Ryan Veliz from Heidelberg. Erick Tuck of Waynesburg met Lago in the consolation quarter finals, where Lago lost by fall. He then moved on to the championship preliminary rounds, where Lago faced Dan Bruin of Waynesburg. He lost the decision, 5-2.
Freshman Michael Anderson (Herminie, Pa./Yough) squared up against Anthony Smith of Wheeling Jesuit. Anderson went on to lose a 12-8 decision.
Freshman Colin Dalrymple (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) recieved a bye in the first consolation round. He then faced off against Washington & Jefferson's Zeke Stroupe. Dalrymple went on to fall in a pin in 3:45, exiting with a score of 7-1.
Senior Steven Scott (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry Traditional Academy) opened up his day against Penn State Mont Alto's Rayem Ali. Scott took Ali down in a pin in just 1:09. Next up for Scott was Thiel College's Mark Douglass. Scott took down Douglass in a pin, just 20 seconds into the match. Scott went on to the quarter finals, where he met Marquil Holt. Scott was pinned 1:46 into the event, exiting with a score of 4-1. Scott qualified for the championship round, where he went head-to-head with Thiel College's Garrett Schweitzer. Scott's run came to an end when he got pinned in 1:46, leaving with a score of 2-0.
Junior Tyler McElhaney (State College, Pa./State College High) competed in the consolation preliminary rounds against Washington and Lee's Sonnieboy Blanco in a major decision, 12-4. In the championships, McElhaney went on to take down Thiel's Jeremy Brady by pin in just 0:43 seconds, closing the match 5-0. McElhaney moved on to the second round of championships to go up against Alma's Matt Tuttle. He fell by pin in 2:16, exiting the match 5-0.
Penn State Greater Allegheny next sees action Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. GA hosts a tri-match with Seton Hill and Penn State Mont Alto.
